Mead Johnson Nutrition endorses breast milk as the superior form of infant nutrition. In marketing our products for infants in the United States, we believe that new mothers have the right to make their own decisions about whether to feed their infants breast milk or infant formula, and we will support those decisions. We do not attempt to influence this decision in any way. In fact, research shows that the overwhelming majority of moms make their infant-feeding decisions in consultation with their doctors before they give birth.
Mead Johnson Nutrition supports the aim of the The World Health Organization (WHO) International Code of Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes (The Code), which is to ensure safe and adequate nutrition for infants, whether they are breastfed or formula-fed, by providing adequate information and appropriate marketing and distribution. In fact, in 1983, Mead Johnson became the first U.S. infant formula manufacturer to enact specific policies and directives in support of the WHO Code.
In developing countries where laws and regulations have been adopted to govern the promotion of infant formula, we abide by those laws. In developing countries where laws and regulations have not been adopted, Mead Johnson Nutrition has developed and complies with our own, internal guidelines. In developed countries, such as the U.S. and Canada, where the WHO Code has not been adopted by law, Mead Johnson complies with those countries' laws and regulations and applies high-quality company standards.
