Building a Lifetime of Thinking and Learning

Your body isn't wasting any time getting your baby's brain in gear. This delicate, complex machine is developing at an amazing rate, thanks in part to a cell-dividing process called neurogenesis.

In the first four months of your pregnancy, neurogenesis works overtime to begin to create the 100 billion neurons your baby will use to think, dream and learn throughout her entire life.

That's why getting the right prenatal nutrition at this stage is so critical to supporting the brain's important work.

Hey There, That's My Baby

You don't look pregnant yet. You may not even feel pregnant yet, unless you're feeling the effects of morning sickness. But your baby is starting to look and feel more like a person every day.

This month, she officially graduates from embryo to fetus, trading in her “tail” for tiny arms, legs, hands and feet. And she's not afraid to use them for her first tiny movements. At first, it's more of a startle, or an involuntary whole-body movement. But soon enough, she'll move her arms and legs one at a time. In the next month she'll also start practicing movements she'll need later on, for eating, drinking, sucking her thumb and asking for the car keys.

Healthy Hints: Month 2

  • Balance that diet.

Nutritious food means nutrients your baby can use to develop. So get balanced, and leave the junk food at the grocery store.
