Baby Development: Nine Month Milestones

Your baby’s ninth month is an exciting time filled with growth and new abilities. As your baby continues to develop, you’ll notice a range of milestones that showcase their progress. From movement to sensory skills, here’s a look ahead at what you might see!

What to Look for During Baby’s Ninth Month

At nine months, your baby is becoming more interactive and curious about the world around them. You’ll likely start to see significant changes in their abilities and behaviors, and a bit more of their personality. Some babies may even start to take their first steps at 9 months old, but it’s not uncommon for that to happen later in their development.

Movement Milestones

Your little one is becoming more active and curious about their world. Expect to see them mastering new physical skills and getting comfortable with moving independently :

  • Crawling: Your baby might be moving around more confidently, whether by crawling, scooting, or even beginning to pull up to stand.
  • Grasping: They’re getting better at picking up small objects with their thumb and forefinger.
  • Sitting Up: Many babies can sit without support for longer periods and may start transitioning from sitting to crawling.

Visual and Hearing Milestones

Your baby’s senses are growing sharper, making them more aware of their environment. You may start to see your little one observing and understanding the motion of objects in their environment. It's great to let them experiment with toys, like passing a ball between their hands, or seeing what happens if you roll the ball across the room!

  • Tracking Objects: They’re now better at following moving objects with their eyes.
  • Recognizing Faces: Your baby can recognize familiar faces and might get excited when seeing you or other loved ones.
  • Responding to Sounds: They may turn their head towards sounds, including their name.

Smelling and Touch Milestone

At nine months, your baby is further exploring the world through their senses. They’re becoming more engaged and curious.

  • Exploring Textures: Babies love feeling different textures with their hands and mouths. Expect them to explore many different objects with their mouths as their teeth continue to come in.
  • Raking Food Towards Them: Your little one may start to reach and “rake” at small pieces of food put in front of them and put the food into their own mouth. It is not too early to start mealtime habits!
  • Smell Recognition: They’re starting to notice and react to different smells, and may show stronger preferences for people, foods, blankets, and toys.

Developmental Milestones

Your baby might not quite utter their first words yet, but you can expect them to start understanding things like their own name. They might look at you or smile when you call them!

  • Communication: You might hear more babbling and see them start saying simple words like “mama” or “dada.”
  • Emotional Development: They’re beginning to show a range of emotions and understand simple words like “no” or “bye-bye.”
  • Cognitive Skills: Their curiosity is growing, leading to more exploring and problem-solving.

When to Talk to Your Pediatrician About Baby’s Development at 9 Months

Keep an eye on your baby’s development to make sure they’re hitting their milestones. If you notice anything unusual, don’t hesitate to reach out to your pediatrician. Look out for:

  • Lack of response to sounds or visual cues.
  • Difficulty moving or handling objects.
  • Limited social interaction or interest in their surroundings.
  • No attempts to babble or communicate.
