There are a few essential baby feeding products new moms need. Use our baby needs checklist below to stock up on supplies that will make formula-feeding time more enjoyable for both of you.

  • A formula that's patterned after breast milk. Look for expert-recommended levels of DHA and ARA, plus choline, whole proteins and balanced nutrition. Formulas are available in powder, ready-to-use liquid, and concentrated liquid forms.
  • Several bottles for formula-feeding.
  • Disposable plastic liners, if your bottles require them.
  • Nipples. If you've been breastfeeding, try a square-tip nipple or an orthodontic nipple. Longer, traditional nipples are a natural for most babies. A cleft palate nurser is designed for babies with cleft lip or cleft palate problems. Be sure to choose the flow level that's appropriate for your baby. Younger babies may do better with a slower-flow nipple. Be sure to check the nipples periodically to see that they're working properly. Throw away any old, cracked, or sticky nipples.
  • Burp cloths.
